Today, there are challenges around our understanding of epilepsy. In this day and age, there are cases where we find children going into convulsion and there are beliefs and myths that people still tap into and the way these patients are treated calls for concern. There are situations where a child goes into convulsion and parents would get a hot instrument and poke them and sometimes cut or lacerate them to stabilize them. There are other situations where you find relatives putting things like a concoction in a child’s mouth even in people who have fits or epilepsy or convulsion or things like that.

So, in order for people to understand this better Monitor Healthcare Ltd (MHL) brought in a specialist on Monitor your Health Show, who educated people on the Facts and Myths about epilepsy, Questions people have asked, and cases where urgent attention is required.

Dr. Adeboye Muhammad is a Consultant Pediatrician, an Associate Professor of Pediatrics with vast experience in pediatric neurology and childhood epilepsy being one of his core areas. Also, he is the chairman of MDCAN, UITH chapter.

Dr Adeboye define terms like epilepsy, convulsion, and seizures. “Starting with seizures, from the English word, this refers to when the child seizes. Breaking it down further, what can make a child or even anybody seize? It is as a result of abnormal neuronal discharge from the brain. There are neurons in the brain that if something goes wrong they can fire abnormally. Knowing fully, that all the parts of the body are controlled by reporting within the brain, it now depends on which area of the body is being represented by the area of the brain that is affected, then, we would see the manifestation of the seizure”.

“Now for instance, if the area that is controlling a particular muscle (muscles of the upper limb, muscles of the lower limbs), if the area where the neurons that had some issues that had to discharge abnormally, you would see that part of the body moving often in a weaker version. A seizure is that abnormal neurological discharge from the Brain.”

He also said “Now, depending on the area, if it is the motor area or the area supplying to the muscles, you would see the movement of the muscle and that is what is known as Convulsion. It can affect other senses, somebody maybe hearing what is and that is a form of sensory seizure. Auditory for instance in some terms in medicine, that is referred to as auditory hallucination. That can be a form of seizure but definitely not a convulsion. Again, if it affects what is known as the autonomic system of the body, one can have a sudden sweat that can just dry up or the heart rate can also rise up and slows down; the respiratory pattern can so be fast and then slows down”.

“There are different forms of seizures: One that affects the muscle movement, where you see the child shaking the hands or moving the legs or turning the head to one side and the head is also shaking, that is referred to as Convulsion”.

Signs and some health-based signs that somebody can see before epilepsy becomes established in the child, types of seizure, harmful practices people often practice, and proper things to do in cases of epilepsy and convulsion.
