Recent Outbreak of Lassa Fever: What You Need to Know

Lassa Fever is a serious and sometimes fatal illness caused by the Lassa virus, which is transmitted to humans through contact with food or household items contaminated with rodent’s urine or feces.

Lassa Fever REMERGED

According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, no fewer than 2,122 suspected cases, 411 confirmed cases, and 72 deaths have been recorded from Lasaa fever in Nigeria this year as of February 11, 2024. These confirmed cases were recorded from 21 states in the country. How long till the whole 36 states are affected if the public is yet ignorant of proper disease prevention and control measures?

This outbreak has raised concerns among health officials and the general public due to its potential effects on public health and the economy. Lassa Fever can result in severe symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle aches, and in some cases, bleeding from the gums, nose, or internal organs. Without prompt treatment, it can lead to complications and even death.

Signs and symptoms of Lassa fever typically occur 1-3 weeks after the patient comes into contact with the virus. About 80% of people with Lassa fever have mild symptoms, including:

  • Fever
  • Tiredness (fatigue)

  • Headache
  • Another 20% have severe symptoms, including:
  • Chest, neck, or stomach pain
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Severe vomiting or diarrhea
  • Bleeding from your mouth, nose, eyes or other mucous membranes
  • Seizures
  • Confusion
